Kindle’s Whispersync for Voice

Audiobook or print – your place will be saved as you toggle back & forth. I love love love this announcement – something I’ve wanted since I wrote this post in my old pre-Booklist Audiobooker blog back in 2007. Here’s what I said

I found this article written by busy mom & Fort Worth Star-Telegram columnist Catherine Mallette to be a refreshing take on the Pullman Golden Compass controversy. I especially liked reading her descriptionof how she “toggled back and forth from real books (at night) to audio books (on the trips to Target and to work).”

And now Amazon has made it a reality in the newest batch of Kindle enhancements, only they call it “Immersive Reading,” and they’ve up the ante with real-time highlighted text following the audio. Here’s more from Amazon:

Whispersync for Voice

Now you don’t have to put a good book down, even if you’re cooking, running or commuting. With Whispersync for Voice, you can seamlessly switch between listening to the Audible audiobook and reading the companion Kindle book right where you left off.

Experience Immersion Reading

With Immersion Reading, Kindle Fire HD can now synchronize Kindle text with companion Audible audiobooks with real-time highlighting to create a more immersive reading experience, as well as deepen learning and comprehension. Almost 15,000 Kindle books and 15,000 companion Audible audiobooks across a wide array of genres are available.

Now let’s just all keep our fingers crossed that something like this might be part of the coming-soon OverDrive Read makeover announced in a letter from Steve Potash today!
