Odyssey Award rocks the house at #ala12
Posted by: Mary Burkey

Kirby Heyborne’s ode to librarians closed the amazing Odyssey Award for Excellence in Audiobook Production celebration at the American Library Association’s Annual Conference in Anaheim. Check out Kirby’s reactions to meeting librarians en mass on his blog I Love My Life. The standing-room only crowd was mesmerized by the Odyssey Honor narrators: Ghetto Cowboy, written by G. Neri, narrated by JD Jackson and produced by Brilliance Audio; Okay for Now, written by Gary D. Schmidt, narrated by Lincoln Hoppe and produced by Listening Library; The Scorpio Races, written by Maggie Stiefvater, narrated by Fiona Hardingham (and Steve West who was unable to attend) and produced by Scholastic Audiobooks; and Young Fredle, written by Cynthia Voigt, narrated by Wendy Carter and produced by Listening Library.

The Odyssey Award-winning title Rotters closed the program, with Kelly Gildea, executive producer of Rotters speaking about the process of creating the audiobook and Rotters author Dan Kraus in the front row. The narrator of Rotters, Kirby Heyborne, took the microphone for an astonding reading from the title, then closed the program with his guitar & vocal salute to librarians. I’ll be posting a video soon, but here are the lyrics to hold you until then:

Thanks to the Odyssey Committee and every librarian that ever lived. You enhance our lives one book at a time. This song’s for you:

Hath not a librarian eyes?
Hath not a librarian hands?
We’ll lead you to the right book
Whether you’re a woman or a man.

If you tickle us, do we not laugh?
Do we not help in times of need?

Our knowledge of books is unsurpassed
If you prick us do we not read?

I’m a librarian!
Sing like a clarion!
We’re here and there-ian
With the strength of a bear-ian!

This is our prayer-ian
Our books we share-ian
There’s no comparian!
The Humanitarian
Oh great Librarian!

It was a fantastic program. Thanks to the audio publishers for bringing signed audios of each title and bringing the narrators and winning producer Kelly Gildea. Thanks as well to the librarians who attended, making it the best attended Odyssey program with 220 in attendance. See you next year in Chicago.
