Girlfriends, grab this audiobook and get in the car.
That’s how I started my starred review for Lisa Scottoline’s My Nest Isn’t Empty, It Just Has More Closet Space in the newest issue of Booklist. If you’re an audiobook fan, and want to convert hesitant readers to the format, just hand them this collection of over 70 short vignettes that will have women of all ages driving around the block to keep on listening. You might think “mystery/thriller” when you hear author Scottoline’s name, but she’s also the author of The Philadelphia Enquirer‘s humorous Chick Wit column highlighting everyday life, which serves as the foundation of My Nest Isn’t Empty. But the audio expands on the column, including daughter Francesca sharing her Gen X thoughts along with mom’s Baby Boomer escapades – with feisty family matriarch Mother Mary featured in many oh-so-true tales. There’s even an interview with both mother & daughter on the last CD, talking about Scottoline’s love of audiobooks.
I became Scottoline’s BFF (although we’ve never met) after hearing the first audio collection of columns , Why My Third Husband Will Be a Dog. With every mile we’ve traveled together, a new bond has been made. Your dog’s a Corgi? Me too! Miss your dearly loved, departed dad? Me too! Your mom has a thirty-year-old bra? Phew – now I don’t feel so bad about that pantry of outdated items I tossed at MY mom’s house!
I’ve given both of these audiobooks to friends, sister, mother, audiobook addicts and senior citizen that had to learn how to play a CD. Every single one has laughed & cried along with the audio – and then progressed to Scottoline’s thrillers, all read by capable professional narrators. Heck, even my husband was snorting along with laughter, as Scottoline revealed the inner working of the female mind. If you want to experience an author who is a master of the microphone, get your hands on My Nest Isn’t Empty… or Why My Third Husband Will Be a Dog. Your commute or Spring Break trip will introduce you to a the perfect travel companion! You can try chapters of Scottoline’s audiobooks on her web site here. Perhaps you dreamed about marrying Prince Charles in junior high like Lisa. Me too!
