Listening with a Critical Ear Part 3
Posted by: Mary Burkey

Welcome to another look at evaluating audiobooks. In Part One & Part Two of Listening with a Critical Ear, I focused on the skills of the narrator. Today’s spotlight is on the production team and the music that creates the setting and mood of an audiobook. Often, it is the music that raises an audiobook title from good to great – just take a listen to many of the Odyssey Award winner & honor titles. The very first Odyssey winner used Walter Dean Myers’ & Christopher Myers’ poetic picture book timeline of the history of Jazz as the starting point, then created an original musical setting for each poem. Get the whole story of how Live Oak Media’s Arnie Cardillo produced that amazing title in this interview.

You’ll find lot more information on the topic in my Book Links magazine column Audiobooks Alive with the Sound of Music. Be sure also to read Ellen Myrick’s terrific Booklist article Say it with Music: Audibooks with Pizzaz. Then plug into one of the youth & adult audiobooks enhanced with music from my list of suggestions from Book LinksWeb Connection page. Happy Listening!
