Spoken word Grammy winners
Posted by: Mary Burkey

On February 8th, the 2009 Grammy Award winners were announced. Of course, I was more interested in the Spoken Word award winners than the music awards! But I am a fan of Alison Krauss, so I must take a break from audiobooks long enough to listen to her duet alblum Raising Sand with former Led Zeppelin Robert Plant, which grabbed both Record & Album of the Year. For the complete list of winners, go here.

Here’s the list of Spoken Word Grammy nominees, with the 2009 winner in italics.

Best Spoken Word Album For Children
(For albums consisting of predominantly spoken word vs. music or song.)

Around The Campfire
Buck Howdy With BB
[Prairie Dog Entertainment]
The Big One-Oh
Dean Pitchford
[Random House Audio/Listening Library]
Brown Bear And Friends
Gwyneth Paltrow
[Macmillan Audio]

The Cricket In Times Square
Tony Shalhoub
[Macmillan Audio]

Yes To Running! Bill Harley Live
Bill Harley
[Round River Records]

Best Spoken Word Album (Includes Poetry, Audio Books & Story Telling) (Adults)

An Inconvenient Truth (Al Gore)
Beau Bridges, Cynthia Nixon & Blair Underwood
[Simon & Schuster Audio]

Born Standing Up
Steve Martin
[Simon & Schuster Audio]

I Am America (And So Can You!)
Stephen Colbert (& Various Artists)
[Hachette Audio]
Life Beyond Measure
Sidney Poitier

When You Are Engulfed In Flames
David Sedaris
[Hachette Audio]

Congratulations to the producers, directors, and narrators of these titles! It seems that the Danielle Steel Spoken Word Smackdown did nothing to improve Martin & Cobert’s chances. Better luck next time!
